Simple Storage Network Guide: From First Chest to Full Automation

Learn how the network works, how to lay out your storage room and how to automate it with import and export cables.

How Simple Storage Mod works

Five steps, in order. The cable line below is literally how your network is built.

  1. Place the root

The network root is the anchor. Everything must connect back to it.

  2. Run cables

Storage cables carry the connection through walls and floors.

  3. Link inventories

Link cables read chests, barrels and modded containers.

  4. Open the table

The request table lists every linked item in one searchable grid.

  5. Automate

Import and export cables move items in and out on their own.

How to use Simple Storage Network

From your first chest link to a fully automated storage room.

Beginner guide

  • Place one network root in your storage room.
  • Run storage cable along your chests and use link cables where cable touches a chest.
  • Connect a Storage Request Table and open it to see everything.
  • Deposit items through the table and let the network choose a chest.

Advanced guide

  • Add import cables to farm collectors and machine outputs.
  • Use export cables with filters to feed furnaces and processors.
  • Set link cable priorities so each item type has a home.
  • Craft remotes for access from anywhere, including other dimensions.

Import and export cables explained

Best practices and tips

  • Keep exactly one root per network.
  • Prefer fewer, larger containers; searching stays quick.
  • Give automation its own cable branch so faults are easy to trace.
  • Leave spare cable at the end of each row for future chests.
  • Label machine rooms with signs; future you will be grateful.

Keyboard shortcuts

Shift + clickMove a whole stack into or out of the network
Type in gridSearch box takes focus in most versions; type part of a name
Right-clickTake half a stack from the grid
Esc / EClose the request table
R / URecipe and usage lookup with JEI or EMI installed

Layouts that scale

Three storage room patterns that stay tidy as your world grows.

The chest wall

One long wall of chests with a link cable behind each. Simple, cheap and perfect for the first weeks of survival.

The priority banks

Separate banks for ores, blocks, farm goods and loot, each with its own link cable priority and a catch-all chest last.

The machine spine

A central cable spine with storage on one side and automation on the other. Faults are easy to trace and expansion is trivial.

Troubleshooting

Most problems come down to versions, cables or filters. Here is where to look.

Common errorLikely causeFix
Game crashes on launchLoader or Minecraft version mismatchMatch the jar to your exact Minecraft version and update the loader.

Items vanish or refuse to insertTwo roots or a strict filterRemove extra roots and check link cable filters and priorities.
Export cable does nothingCable facing the wrong way or empty filterRotate the cable toward the target and set a filter item.
Lag in large basesMany fast cables and tiny inventoriesRemove unneeded speed upgrades and use larger containers.

Known issues

  • Some search bars from recipe mods can overlap the grid at certain GUI scales; changing GUI scale or the recipe mod's bar position fixes it.
  • New Minecraft versions can arrive a few weeks after release.

Performance tips

  • Split far-away outposts into separate networks.
  • Avoid import/export loops on the same chest.
  • Allocate 4–6 GB RAM to modpacks, not more than you need.
