1. Minecraft version
The file name includes the target Minecraft version. It must match your game exactly; 1.20.1 and 1.21.1 builds are not interchangeable.
2. Mod loader
Current builds target NeoForge, older ones Forge. There is no Fabric build; Fabric players should use Tom's Simple Storage.
3. Dependencies
Some versions require a small library mod. The release notes name it. Install the version that matches your Minecraft release.
4. Verify the file
Run certutil -hashfile file.jar SHA256 on Windows or shasum -a 256 file.jar on macOS and Linux, and compare it with the published hash.
